The use of mullein flower has been well documented in journals, pharmacopoeias and scientific literature. It was used during the Middle Ages for a variety of treatments. In the mid-16th century, German botanist Adam Lonitzer praised mullein for respiratory support, for heart health and for other benefits. In the 17th century, mullein broth was given to cattle that developed a cough. This may explain one more of its nicknames: bullock’s lungwort. More recently, in traditional Irish medicine, mullein has been cultivated for use in respiratory support, and according to the European Union Monograph, its traditional use is in soothing an irritated throat.
